Granites in Large Kitchens

This kitchen design was inspired by the owner's painted canvas of a table setting and the desire for the kitchen to become a backdrop for an art and glassware collection. The redesign involved combining the original kitchen with two smaller rooms, and removing many structural elements including a fireplace and ceiling beams. Three islands are part of the plan: one containing the cooktop; another that is actually a freestanding cabinet housing the ovens; and the third island featuring the sink, dishwasher, and a service bar created from sandblasted glass supported by stainless steel posts. Contemporary cabinets in a maple finish with minimal detail are accented with textured glass. Stainless steel appliances, pulls, and chair legs match the islands' structural accents and tie all of the components together. Comfortable glass chairs continue the glassware theme. Three cobalt blue glass pendants from Oligo provide a splash of color, while halogen lighting in undercabinet fixtures and in a light cove contributes sparkle and remains as unobtrusive as the general recessed illumination.

Serving a growing family, this kitchen design is pared down in a functional layout, relying on details to warm up the busy living space. A handsome mantel above the range, crown molding, and corbels contribute to the atmosphere, which is brightened with birch wood cabinets in a painted cream glaze finish. Above the sink, a cantilevered bay window allows a view of the outside. A large center island is built in two levels, one for working and service, and the lower section for dining. The light honey-colored granite of the countertops continues to the dining area, which is accented with a wrought iron chandelier, coordinating with the iron dining chairs. The roping detail of the chandelier is repeated in the tassels of the chairs.
