Granites in Medium Kitchens

This second-place winning design evolved from the homeowner's request for ?something different.? Mixing unusual materials, colors, shapes, and textures, the design relies on the use of stainless steel and soapstone and scone (Italian limestone) countertops to tie the areas together. Interest is heightened with the introduction of an angular workspace plus a curved dining area, a combination that is echoed in the angular niches around the refrigerator and the curved corner hutch and range hood (which are out of camera range). A mix of cabinet colors includes Golden Maple, Brown Cherry, and Mint Green. The Campagna limestone tile floor contributes a quiet note, as does the uncluttered ceiling with recessed lighting enhanced only by stainless trims as a decorative touch. ?The small expanse of cable lighting was added for fun,? notes designer David Heigl. ?It brings sparkle to the dining area.?

Accommodating two cooks, this kitchen exudes French Country charm thanks to plenty of details. Rearranging the kitchen permitted the installation of a large communal island, which holds plenty of storage and the microwave. The hammered, antiqued copper prep sink with its bronze faucets is situated near a single-drawer dishwasher. The cleanup sink is integrated with a dishwasher and flanked by a hutch for dish storage. The collaboration of both a kitchen designer and an interior designer, the space contains handmade French pine cabinets that are adorned with rusted iron hardware. The island granite is honed and color-enhanced for richness without sheen, which minimizes glare from overhead recessed lighting. Undercabinet lighting, from FSC Lighting, illuminates the Jerusalem Gold Classic honed limestone work surfaces along the walls. Integral fixtures in the cooktop hood (created from hand-trawled plaster and a limestone cornice) highlight an Italian mosaic. A second mosaic is in front of the sink. Hand-hewn beams intersecting the island frame all of the elements.

Granite Edges
Whether stone is set on a cement base or laid in sand also depends on style. Stone's rounded and asymmetrical edges naturally lend themselves to creating flowing designs.
Kitchens New Jersey
Tile countertops are popular in country-style kitchens and are durable materials. However, all tile has grout lines, which can cause problems. Grout soils very easily and will require frequent cleaning.
