Other Rooms

Kitchen and bath designers are often called upon to improve home offices, great rooms, or media areas where organization is key to the usefulness of the space. In this project, the clients wanted a large entertainment center and wet bar in the main room of their unfinished walkout basement. They also planned to use the room for informal entertaining and needed a mini-kitchen with cabinet storage and pull-up seating for at least four. In the wet bar area, the maple storage cabinets are stepped to break up the expanse of wood, and angled shelves provide asymmetric balance to the tall cabinetry. The maple base cabinets in the wet bar are topped with black granite, which follows the angle of the stairs and ends in a seven-sided, cherry-based counter table. Although recessed lighting provides general illumination for the entire space, low-voltage halogen ribbon track lighting is used to add interest to objects on the shelves. Opal glass pendants on the same track offer illumination over the table.

Besides space limitations, the challenge in this first-place winning kitchen design was to re-create an area with Old World appeal for the kitchen and apartment of the clients' mother who had come to live with them. Layout and lighting had to also accommodate the elderly woman's failing vision. Recessed lighting overhead and undercabinet halogens from Hafele, brought illumination to critical areas such as the sink, countertops, and the tiled cooktop/oven area. Contributing to the country charm are painted and antiqued cabinets, distressed barn beams, a tongue-oiled wood floor, and butcher block countertops. Appliances such as the refrigerator, dishwasher, and microwave are concealed behind wood panels. A farm sink and bronze-colored fixtures as well as wicker baskets for storage and an antique hanging chandelier add to the atmosphere.
